Q: What is the difference between incandescent (tungsten) lights and HMI lights?
A: Tungsten lights use globes (bulbs) that work like the light bulbs you have at home,
except they are bigger and use a lot more power. HMI lights use special globes that
require complex electronic transformers (called ballasts) to produce light. Practically
speaking, HMI's require more technical knowledge to use than Tungsten lights.
Photographically, HMI globes produce light that is close to the color temperature of
sunlight (5600° Kelvin, often called "blue" or "daylight balanced"), whereas Tungsten
globes give off a warmer color (3200° Kelvin, often called "orange" or "indoor
balanced").
